Sri Lanka will play five ODIs against India at home in between two legs of their Pakistan tour, according to a cricket website. Sri Lanka Sports Minister Gamini Lokuge said that his team will tour Pakistan in two phases — one in second half of January and another in late February, in order to accommodate an ODI series against India, most likely in first part of February.

Sri Lanka will first tour Pakistan for five ODIs and a Twenty20 international and then go back to Pakistan in late February to play three Tests.

“We will honour the Pakistan commitment. I have told Duleep Mendis (Sri Lanka Cricket CEO) to look at the option of touring Pakistan first for five ODIs and a Twenty20. The team will fly directly from Bangladesh (after January 16) and then return to Colombo to play a five-match ODI series with India. We will then return to Pakistan for three Tests,” Lokuge said though without giving a detailed itinerary.

Pakistan has been anxiously waiting for confirmation of an itinerary after India cancelled their tour following Mumbai terror attacks.

Pakistan was kept waiting as Sri Lanka was also reportedly negotiating an ODI series with India after their tour of Bangladesh which ends on January 16.

The other problem was Pakistan was scheduled to tour Bangladesh for a five-match ODI series from March 3. But now SLC CEO Duleep Mendis has himself spoken to Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to postpone the tour by a few days to March 6, according to the website.

Most Asia and Pacific markets were solidly in positive territory Wednesday during limited trading on the final session of a dismal year.

Australia’s All Ordinaries index gained 1.9 percent, while the Shanghai Composite was up just 0.1 percent. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng picked up 1.3 percent and the Straits Times index in Singapore was up three-quarters of a percent.

Wall Street surged Tuesday in an end-of-the-year bargain buying spree as investors scooped up a variety of shares hit hard in the 2008 stock market battering.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 2.2 percent. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index gained 2.4 percent and the Nasdaq composite rose 2.7 percent.

All three major gauges jumped in the first few minutes of the session on news that the government will pour $6 billion into GMAC Financial Services, the financing arm of struggling automaker General Motors.

The advance lost some steam after the release of weak economic reports, but then recharged as the session wore on.

“We’re seeing a nice little rally in the last few sessions of the year, with everyone kind of just waiting for the year to be over,” said John Wilson, chief technical strategist at Morgan Keegan.

“I think people are anticipating a January rally and are trying to get in ahead of that,” said Ron Kiddoo, chief investment officer at Cozad Asset Management.

Wilson said that he thinks that the start of the new year should bring in more buyers and that stocks could see a bigger rally then. The lows of the fall were the lows of this bear market and the market is bottoming or has bottomed, he believes.Since bottoming on November 20, U.S. stocks, as measured by the S&P 500, have rallied 18 percent.

“When you look at past bear markets and recession, stocks tend to turn six or nine months before the economic data bottom, and I think that’s what we’re seeing now,” he said.

Kiddoo said he thinks that 2009 will be an up year, but added that he’s not convinced a rally will kick in as soon as January.

In other global trading, European markets gained on Tuesday.

U.S. light crude oil for February delivery fell 99 cents to settle at $39.03 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, after gaining 13 percent over the previous two sessions.

Gasoline prices fell 0.3 cent to a national average of $1.616 a gallon, according to a survey of credit-card swipes released Tuesday by motorist group AAA.

The release of the much-hyped “Ghajini” starring Aamir Khan on Thursday ran into trouble on Tuesday (Dec 23) over alleged copyright violation with the Madras High Court staying its screening and a separate petition seeking similar action was moved in Bombay High Court.

The interim injunction in Chennai was granted by Justice P R Shivakumar on a civil suit filed by Chandrasekharan, claiming to be the copyright holder for remaking and dubbing of the Tamil film. In Mumbai, KBC Pictures, a lesser-known company, approached the High Court, claiming it possesses copyright to the story and screenplay of the film and sought a stay on the movie’s release.

On the other hand, Chandrasekharan claimed he had only parted with the Chennai city rights, Telugu remake and dubbing rights and satellite rights and retained all other rights of “Ghajini”.

He contended that in April he had come to know that the Chennai-based Geetha Arts Division of Allu Entertainment Pvt Ltd, the producers, and director A R Murugadoss were contemplating production of the film in Hindi and were negotiating with persons in Bollywood.

He stated that he was ‘surprised, shocked and perplexed’ as to how Geetha Arts and Murugadoss could entertain any idea of producing the film in Hindi when they had not been given any rights for the same.

The plaintiff said that he had come to understand that Geetha Arts and director Murugadoss had claimed that they had been granted the rights to remake or dub “Ghajini” in all other Indian languages and on this strength were negotiating the film’s production in Hindi.

Meanwhile, contending that following his complaint before the Tamil Film Producers’ Council in Chennai, Chandrasekharan said the council had summoned him and the respondents (Geetha Arts and Murugadoss) to resolve the issue. The respondents initially responded but later they did not respond to calls from the council.

The plaintiff stated that during the course of conciliation the respondents claimed that on September 28, 2005 he had parted with the rights in all other Indian languages in favour of Geetha Arts. Denying the claim, the plaintiff claimed the council were able to see that there was fabrication of records.

He alleged that on January seven, two persons had come to his office at Salem and threatened him and his family with dire consequences if he did not withdraw his complaint lodge with the council. He said he was constrained to report the matter with the Pallapatti police and a case was registered.

The High Court on February 26 had issued an interim stay on the criminal proceedings on a petition filed by Murugadoss. The criminal original petition was still pending. The plaintiff contended that he had also lodged a complaint with the Central Crime Branch, Salem, against the “accused persons for fabrication of records, cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy”.
